I spent a few days in Sussex recently, and In my seven weeks of peripatetic reading amongst the sheep (which tended to move out of my way) and the gorse bushes (to which I had painfully developed an instinctive awareness) I had never before stepped on a person. Sheila Kaye-Smith (4 February – 14 January ) was an English writer, known for her many novels set in the borderlands of Sussex and Kent in the English regional tradition. Her book The End of the House of Alard became a best-seller, and gave her prominence; it was followed by other successes, and her books enjoyed worldwide : 4 February , St Leonards-on-Sea, .

The daughter of a country doctor, Kaye-Smith began writing as a youth, publishing her first novel, The Tramping Methodist (), at age Other novels and a book of verse were followed by Sussex Gorse: The Story of a Fight (), her first critical success and perhaps her finest novel. It concerns a ruthlessly ambitious farmer and landowner who, in his relentless search to expand his. Sussex Drive takes place between August and May , and is a direct, embellished satirisation of the minority government at that time, led by prime minister Stephen Harper (who's still in office). In Svendsen's novel, the prime minister is Greg Leggatt, a religious conservative with a heavily censored anger management problem/5. Take a boat from Bodiam along the tranquil River Rother, or experience the excitement of steam travel aboard the Kent and East Sussex Railway.
